Dragon Mart Project Update

Bringing you the latest news on the upcoming Dragon Mart Project:

The project's official website is online: http://dragonmart.org/english/index.asp

Interestingly, the website still contains the grand opening date of December 2012.  Yet, this recent article states that permits are not yet complete, and construction hasn't yet begun. Perhaps, a December 2012 opening date is a bit optimistic.

The project is slated to include:
  • 100,000 square meters / 1,076,000 square feet of exhibition space
  • 84 hectares / 208 acres
  • Total of 235,000 square meters / 2,528,600 square feet of total construction, which will include the construction of 4000 homes to accommodate 2500 Chinese workers.

YouTube Video (in Spanish) about the project:

Paul McCartney to play in Chichen Itza

It was recently announced that Sir Paul McCartney has been invited to play a concert in Chichen Itza. The date for his concert has yet to be announced, but it is speculated to be in March/April of 2012.

The concert will be the latest in a series that has included Placido Domingo, Sarah Blackman, and Elton John.

The concert announcement isn't welcomed by all parties. The INAH, a group of archaeologists, is collecting signatures on a petition to express their disagreement with the concerts:

Sir Paul McCartney, You enjoy great public fame due to your musical and business talents. With the former, you changed and shook the ancient constraints of two-faced Victorian morality … The music and lyrics of you and John Lennon, as well as George Harrison and Ringo Starr, contributed to the new configurations of social imagination of much of the western world.
These actions and emotions projected as transgressors to the status quo. Those who listened and shared your rebellion assumed your many diverse ways and borrowed them for some circumstances, just like “déjalo ser” — “Let It Be” …
To give a concert at the archaeological zone of Chichén Itzá, violates the constitutional order of the Mexican Republic … The archaeological site of Chichén Itzá is a national asset, in common use and public domain, attached to the EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM OF MEXICAN SO NO PARTICULAR PERSON OR GROUP MAY profit from it … it would be unlawful and illegal.
The ignorance of Mexican law does not excuse compliance, if the governor of Yucatán, Ivonne Ortega Pacheco and her subordinates did not mention the constitutional provision on the archaeological site in question, it is obvious that it was because they intended to profit economically and politically with their concert.
On the other hand, the archaeological zone of Chichén Itzá, has enormous significance for Mexicans and is a unique study area for understanding the different stories of the western world. For this reason, teachers INAH researchers working to understand, preserve and protect, rather than exploit and squander, like exotic scenery for use and enjoyment of a few.
Now you know that the concert in Chichen Itza is illegal, illegitimate, and contrary to the interests of Mexicans. If, despite this, you perform [the concert], it demonstrates to us that it is indeed a violation of the order, always and when the transgression benefits you, all under the pretext of ‘let it be’.”
Your answer is in the wind.

What do you think about these concerts being held in Chichen Itza?

Apparently, in 1976, Puerto Morelos "didn't have much going for it".

Came across this on a web archive and thought you might get a kick out of it:

"This rather primitive port city sometimes known as Puerto Morelos is near the northeast tip of the Yucantan Peninsula, and it doesn't have much going for it..."

Update on "Medical City" project in Puerto Morelos

Here is a recent article updating the potential "Medical City" project in Puerto Morelos.

[By the way --- If this potential project gets off of the ground, the potential for Puerto Morelos to be an incredible long term investment is excellent!]

Brought you in English by the handy folks at Google:

The creation of a medical city in Cancun is no longer just an idea to become a reality, even if it is long term, because given the nature of it will be completely ready in more than a decade, but the potential economic status will bring to the billions of dollars, said the president of the Association of Medical Travel, Medical Tourism Association in Quintana Roo, Servando Acuña Braun. In that sense, Acuña Braun explained that he is a team of experts in this type of projects carried out analysis of the construction of mega hospital complex, that it must meet the specifications must be located between Puerto Morelos and Solidaridad municipality.

Subsequently installed a trust to be composed of businessmen, doctors and officials from the three branches of government, who will be responsible for developing the same. "For the medical city right now we are in meetings with specialist advisers in the medical city building, and asked the state government to allocate the land and there are three possible under consideration, once it is, come and say advisers what is the right one, because it must meet certain specifications as being five or six miles from the airport at which time they enter a trust that has yet to be formed and then start building it, "he said. also explained that the first hospital to be built must have the latest in hospital technology, so that the cost the same is estimated at billions of dollars, why are investors looking for co domestic and foreign, while the second hospital may be an extension of those already operating in the city.

"We believe that the first hospital going to be a co investment between Mexican and U.S., we have already held talks with investors McCallen, in fact there are investors who also Jalisco invest in this hospital, the second is expected to be an expansion of those already here. investment to create this city is huge, as only the first clinic comes to 1.5 billion dollars, a thousand 500 million dollars, because in the case of hospitals it is not expensive construction, but the team, "he said.

Travel Medical President reiterated that the medical city is a project of 15 years, time that are covered between 10 and 15 clinics, and an area of retirees, better known as baby boomers, that would be built around the same, this will generate a source of jobs and an economic billionaire. But the hotels will benefit both Cancun and Riviera Maya, who are beginning to report the first benefits of this new tourist segment.

"About this medical city, is planning another mini city for retirees, which is a niche market important not because we have not yet capture all the medical facilities they need, but would trigger this segment becoming the retirement home and hospital of more than 60 million baby boomers, and in regard to the economic flow talk of billions, as at present a medical tourist leaves about nine thousand dollars (126,000 pesos) per visit, "he argued. Finally, Acuña Braun noted that already are taking the first steps to convert to the destination medical tourism paradise, because after the presentation of Cancun in the World Medical Tourism Congress in October 2011, it was necessary to national and international certification of hospitals, same start in February with the first courses of induction and with the participation of the 11 hospitals that are part of the association chairman. With that said this year, will be certified doctors, nurses and laboratories that are in these hospitals.

Importing your Foreign Vehicle into Puerto Morelos by Ferry

Update: Read the updated rules and regs for updated cars here.

Update Aug 2015: Readers now report that the boat leaves Miami on Tuesday and arrives in Puerto Morelos on Thursday.

I sat down with fellow Puerto Morelians, Tom and Lynette Klinge, to find out about their recent experience in shipping their car from Florida to Puerto Morelos.  I thought I would share their experience with you, in case you decide to import your vehicle.

Firstly, you will need to transport your car to Port Everglades (Miami), Florida as this is where the shipping company, Hyde Shipping, is located. Some choose to drive the vehicle to Florida, while others choose to have it hauled there.

Tom and Lynette chose to drive their vehicle to the Hyde Shipping Offices in Florida. They were quick to mention that their Hyde Shipping Representative, Joe Rodriguez, was extremely helpful and supportive during the shipping process. (I have included his contact information at the bottom of this article.)

At the time this article's writing, Hyde is shipping weekly with the boat leaving Florida on Thursday and arriving in Puerto Morelos on Tuesday.  Your vehicle will need to be in Florida several days prior to the designated departure day. (Tom and Lynette's vehicle actually arrived a day ahead of schedule, on Monday.) Your vehicle will need to be in Florida several days prior to the designated departure day.

Hyde Shipping will be responsible for shipping your vehicle from the dock in Florida to the dock in Puerto Morelos. Upon arrival, it is your responsibility to retrieve it and deal with the customs agents at the port in Puerto Morelos.

Once is your vehicle arrives in Cancun, you will need to go into Cancun's SAGARPA office to get your import letter stamped. The Hyde Representative, Joe Rodriguez, coordinated this with Tom and Lynette.

At this point, you will also need your Temporary Import Permit and Sticker for your Vehicle.  For this Permit & Sticker, you have 2 options:

1) You can apply for it prior to shipping your vehicle. Apply 3-4 weeks prior to your departure date to be certain that you have the paperwork in time.  To apply in for your import permit in advance, you will need to visit the Banjercito Bank Website.  You can apply online through their website.

Tom and Lynette applied for their permit in advance using Banjercito and said that it was definitely worth it.  They found their Banjercito Representative to be very helpful and it was quite an easy procedure.  Once the permit was shipped to them in the U.S., they affixed the sticker it to their vehicle window prior to having it transported by Hyde.

2) Alternatively, you can go to the customs office in Cancun and apply for your Temporary Import Permit & Sticker.  Your Hyde Shipping Representative can also guide you through this step of the process, but it may be well-worth doing it in advance to save yourself the hassle.

Tom and Lynette arrived at the Puerto Morelos Port with originals and copies of the following: Passports, Vehicle Title, the paperwork from the Temporary Import Permit, and the SAGARPA Letter.  (If you choose to receive your Temporary Import Permit in Cancun, rather than applying early, you will also need to bring this paperwork with you.)

After meeting with the customs agent and the port official, they paid approx. $45 USD for the one day that the car had been at the dock. (They charge a daily storage fee.)

Costs will vary depending on the type of vehicle you ship.  Tom and Lynette reported that their Temporary Import Permit was approx. $300 USD and their cost from Hyde Shipping was $750 USD.

Important Notes:
  1. Plan to ship your vehicle empty - no other household items in the vehicle.
  2. If you plan to leave your car in the country for longer than your original tourist visa (valid up to 180 days), you must have an FM3. See my post, Importing a Foreign Vehicle into Mexico, for more info.

85,000 Hotel Rooms in Quintana Roo by the end of 2012

The governor of Quintana Roo, Beto Borge, was present at the inauguration ceremony of the Tourism Fair in Madrid, Spain. In his remarks, he provided some tourism statistics that I thought you might find interesting:
  • Quintana Roo generates almost 50% of all tourism income made in Mexico.
  • With the addition of 4,000 new hotel rooms in 2012, the total number of rooms in Q. Roo will be 85,000.
  • In 2011, the Cancun Airport had 13 million passengers (is that coming and going??) & 3 million visitors arrived in Q. Roo on cruise ships.

"We Move Forward" Women's Retreat in Isla Mujeres

Photo Credit: Michele Kinnon, Life's a Beach Blog

Just thought I would share and spread the news from Life's a Beach Blog:  A fantastic women's retreat is planned for March 8, 9, 10th!

Here's A Quick Summary:

On March 8, 9 and 10 2012, a special 3-day International Women's Day Conference, We Move Forward, is taking place on Isla Mujeres. The conference is for women interested in life-long learning, personal and professional growth at all stages of life.  It is a well blended event that combines daily inspirational speakers with practical interactive workshops, movement sessions (yoga, pilates, batuka), a connection/networking session, local entertainment and a history lesson from a Mayan elder.

For a limited time, the event organizer, Retreats on Isla is currently offering reduced enrollment for WMF 2012! Women who register before January 31st will receive a $212 discount off the cost of the event. Proceeds from the event go to support local charities and sponsorship for local women who otherwise could not afford such an experience.

Being a quaint tropical island is part of Isla's charm, and with this comes limitations to the number of women it can accommodate during this busy time of year.  The event offerings are generous and economically priced so if your head and heart are telling you to register we encourage you to do so quickly.

Go to this link for more info: http://www.buyplaya.com/blogs/rob_kinnon/archive/2012/01/18/we-move-forward-retreat-isla-mujeres.aspx

Puerto Morelos Tire Repair Service Kudos!

Tire Repair Service Truck
Recently, I posted that there was a new tire repair service in Puerto Morelos that would come to your home or wherever you have broken-down to address your tire issues.

Well, Murphy's Law prevailed. I walked out of my house the other morning to see my front, right tire totally flat.

I took the opportunity to call Vulcanizadora Panchito, and he showed up within an hour of my call.  (They are based near Playa del Carmen, but service the Puerto Morelos Area.)

The repairman who arrived was quick & courteous.  He got to fixing my tire (flattened thanks to a screw) and promised to call me at work when he was finished.  Upon his call, I returned to find my tire repaired with a plug.  I have been driving on it for several days now and it is holding up well.

Kudos to Vulcanizadora Panchito for excellent service!

Three Kings Day in Puerto Morelos, Mexico! January 6th

Today is Three Kings Day!  It is the celebration of the Magi's arrival to the Nativity.

Children of Mexico leave their shoes out on the night of the 5th stuffed with hay to feed the camels of the coming kings.  Sometime in the night, the kings arrive to feed their camels and leave behind treats for the children in their shoes.

Rosca de Reyes
It's also the day to enjoy the Rosca de Reyes - a large wreath-shaped bread filled with dry fruits and a baby Jesus baked inside.  The person who gets the piece with the baby is then responsible for the Día de la Candelaria (February 2nd) party where tamales are traditionally served.

Each year on January 6th, Kings travel about town spreading candy and good cheer to the little ones in Puerto Morelos.  Keep an eye out for their trailer coming by!  After the church service ends around 6:30, all gather in front of the kindergarden (oceanfront, south of the Town Square) to break open a piñata
