Mea Culpa: No Ruins in Georgia

I passed along a found article about Mayan Ruins being found in Georgia last week.

After further investigation, turns out not to be a true story.  DOH!  So, I wanted to be sure to pass along the correction before the false news continues to be spread.

Medical City Project slated for Puerto Morelos

According to this article in the "El Economista", Puerto Morelos is the site for a major medical facility that is in the works.

Here is the Google Translation of the article for a mas o menos translation for non-Spanish readers:

The Medical Tourism Association in Cancun, Mexico or Medical Travel AC, ready to launch a high-level hospital concept called Medical City in an area between the city and the alcaldia of Puerto Morelos.

Servando Acuña, president of the agency, explained that in early 2012 will define an area not less than 60 hectares, which houses between 10 and 15 of the most prestigious hospitals in Mexico, drawing air connectivity Cancun offers more than 140 cities Americans.

The aim is to develop the infrastructure necessary to trigger medical tourism in the Mexican Caribbean, from hospitals and heliports, until recovery or clinical care rooms, mainly oriented to the U.S. demand for these services.

This area will feature the most advanced methods of waste management, and various forms of medical services ranging from diagnostic centers or outpatient medicine to specialized teams in all kinds of diseases and ailments or areas of R & D.

He said that Cancun offers the possibility to integrate these services for patients with all sorts of amenities for the companions and the medical staff of these hospitals, by incorporating hotels, shopping centers and transportation systems that form a healthcare destination experience as in Dubai.

However, he said that investment is still uncertain as uncertain is the size of the project is under development. Spearheading a national commitment

In this vein, Acuña also announced that Cancun is leading the initiative to push from the federal Secretariat of Tourism of Mexico international release as a medical tourism destination and start in the same six years that promotion.

The launch of the Mexican Caribbean was in 2011, including this offer in the promotion from the Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Tourism Promotion Trust the Riviera Maya is made in the U.S. market, but with limited infrastructure just beginning to consolidate to be able to wrest market share from Brazil, currently the power in terms of number of internationally certified hospitals are concerned.Currently there are 10 Mexican hospitals certified by the Joint Commission International, but there is an inventory of 159 medical institutions endorsed by the General Health Council are included in the bid, plans to launch from the Tourism Ministry to Mexico to promote internationally in this niche market he said.

Figures from the Medical Travel Mexico AC, taken up in publications like The Economist and Time realize that health tourism bill currently 20.000 million and is expected to double that figure over the next 10 years. Only 2015 in the United States (main market is oriented medical supply Mexican Caribbean) will spend 20% of gross domestic product on health care while 25% of the population have no social security.

Also, it is expected that 220 million baby boomers in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand will need medical care in 2012, because every day about 11,000 of them age 50.

Puerto Morelian Spotlight: Photographer Michael Maurus

I have had the absolute pleasure of getting to know fellow Puerto Morelian, Michael Maurus, through the experience of being photographed by him and his talented lens for the 2012 Puerto Morelos Calendars.

Michael Maurus is a fantastic, award-winning photographer and has an amazing story to share.  Hailing from Germany, his recent exit from the "rat race" landed him in a hut living amongst the Mayan for six months.  Now, he has landed in Puerto Morelos!

Read Michael's story of how "the bubble called Puerto Morelos welcomed me with open hearts".  He was kind enough to assemble this amazing article when I invited him to share his Puerto Morelos Story as a part of our "Puerto Morelian Spotlight" article series.  His Puerto Morelos experience -- and the photos he has included -- are NOT to be missed!

By the way, Michael's 2012 Puerto Morelos Calendars HAVE ARRIVED at a local Puerto Morelos stores!  Be sure to pick one up!  You'll be supporting local businesses and various Puerto Morelos Community Programs when you do!!

Some time ago, I invited fellow Puerto Morelians to share their story with us here on the blog.  I think it will be a great way to get to know the people, businesses, and charities that are here in town.  This continuing collection will be titled "Puerto Morelian Spotlight".  Each of the posts will have this title and will have this tag, so that you can easily search for these posts in this blog.

So...(here comes the plea):  If you have a Puerto Morelos story, great recount of your favorite event, want to tell about your favorite watering hole, have a local business, even a great Puerto photo that you'd like to share, please email me.

Winter Solstice at Chichen Itza

Today is the Winter Solstice -- the shortest day of the year.  Here is a neat article from American Egypt that explains what happens at Chichen Itza on the winter solstice.

I love how the Mayans used their architecture to create light and shadows according to the calendar!  Isn't it amazing that they had such an amazing depth of astrological knowledge??

Dec 21, 2011 -- One Year Until the End! :)

Well, it's December 21, 2011.  So, it's officially ONE YEAR until the end of the Mayan Era, the end of the Mayan Calendar, or the apocalypse  - depending on which camp you are in.

So, here's the question: Which camp ARE you in?  Leave us a comment with your thoughts!

[If anything, use it as a great excuse to start checking off the things on your bucket list!  After all, you really never truly know when your time ends!!]

To celebrate the end of -- whatever it's going to be the end of -- I've added a Countdown to December 21, 2012 Ticker to the right column of this blog's website.  We can track our demise together!

Furnishing your Mexico Home for Living & Rentals

When I moved to Puerto Morelos from Michigan, I had A LOT to learn about furnishing in a tropical climate.  Now, it's pretty comical...

When we moved down here full time, Caden (my son) was just beginning to toddle.  So, the first thing I did was buy large area rugs for our living room and his bedroom to soften a tumble onto the tile floors.  First things purchased & first things thrown out...within a month.  I had bought "carpet" style rugs.  They molded.  They collected the sand (and the sand's sand fleas).  They were huge and required moving all of the furniture two or three times per week to beat them outside.  It was ridiculous.  Lesson learned.

I've also learned that the least amount of fabric, the better.  Those woven rattan couches, now made in PVC for indoor/outdoor use, with only seat and back cushions are fantastic.  Less Fabric = Less Material to smell musty.  By the way, if you buy the PVC type of furniture that can be found in the outdoor sections of furniture stores, their cushions are already covered in outdoor fabric -- which is almost a must-have.

Indoor/Outdoor fabric has come a long way since the days of that plastic and canvas materials of years past.  Companies, namely Sunbrella, now make indoor/outdoor fabric that feels just like normal upholstery.  I will submit to you that while more expensive -- you'll only cover your cushions once!  These fabric are UV resistant so they won't fade -- even in front of your picture window.  They also are mold/mildew resistant -- another "must have" for our humid summer months.  They are also virtually stain-proof!  Originally designed for boat furniture, they stand up to sun, salt, and stains.  You literally can use soap and water to remove almost anything.

My living room furniture is covered in Sunbrella, in a sunny living room that has no curtains, and is continually abused by 2 boys.  I have NO stains after years of use.  None!  Was it cheap?  No.  But, in the long run, it was less expensive than having to recover the furniture frequently.

Having a company that offers vacation rentals also means NUMEROUS shopping trips to buy the list of things that houses need to be stocked with.  We've got it down, almost; we're always tweaking the list.  But, if you are furnishing a new home or adding the details to your existing to rent, we have a checklist that you can use!

Our tips that we have for furnishing a home and the household inventory list is available online!  It is tucked into our Homeowner's Packet.  Check out pages 11-16!

Fishing in Isla Blanca, Mexico

Today, we headed to Isla Blanca (north of Cancun) for some fishing. Our guide, Edwin of Cancun Fly Fishing Express, is fantastic. He lives to fish, and he is great with the kids.

We have a little boat that we keep docked in Isla Blanca, but with all four of us, plus Edwin, things get tight.  So, he offered his larger boat to take out for the day. As always, we had a great time.

The fish really weren't biting -- probably the north winds we are having. Nonetheless, our day was filled with spotted eagle rays, flying stingrays, flamings, cranes, ducks, tons of other awesome birds that I can't name, and sea turtles.

It was a great day on the water!

Have you ever been fishing while here?  Whether you fish in the open ocean, or spin/flyfish on the flats of Isla Blanca, it won't disappoint!

Easton and Caden

Easton loves to fish -- almost as much as his big brother!

A Few Puerto Morelos News Items

Congrats, Puerto Morelos Fisherman!  They hauled in FOUR TONS of lionfish during the month of November!!!

Check out this article from Sail-World.com, written by Paul Higgins.  He decided to take a sabbatical and set sail.  His travels took him to Puerto Morelos to try and help a fellow sailor in distress.  He ended up creating a sailing chart program out of the experience.

Puerto Morelos is home to a marine biology lab for the National University of Mexico.  There are a variety of research projects that happen here.  I often meet scientists from all over the world who travel here for their research.  Here is a recent article, from research generated here in Puerto Morelos, about the acidification of the oceans and its effect on coral reefs.

In other research news from our UNAM Biology Lab, Puerto Morelos -- along with several other Mexican cities -- have had monitoring stations installed underwater to record the effects of climate change.

"Notes to Self in Mexico"

Came across this new blog,  "Feed Me Tortillas".  She has listed her "Notes to Self in Mexico".

She's inspired me to create my list:
  1. Look at the beach every day!
Between work, kids, and life -- I realized awhile ago that it had been days since I spent any time enjoying the beauty that is right in front of me.  I take time every day, even if it's a short moment, to take in the beach.
  2. Keep it simple, silly.
Things here just don't work if they are complicated -- on all sorts of levels.  Keeping it simple saves my sanity.
  3. I realize that I shall never leave Telcel, Telmex, or Cablemas in under an hour.
I get it now.  It just ain't going to happen.  So I take a good magazine.
  4. Tacos are my Friend!
How many ways can you make them??  It's literally endless -- and FAST!
  5. I shall relish my housekeeper!
When I first moved here, I wasn't used to having any help in the house.  Then, I fell in line with the norm here and hired a housekeeper once per week.  Then, I had her come twice per week.  I kept bumping up the number of days, until now -- she's here 6 days a week.  I am dependent.  I admit it.  And I LOVE my clean house. ;)

What are YOUR "Notes to Self in Mexico"?

Check out this article, Mexico Adds Yet Another Brick to the 2012 Maya Legend.

"Most experts had cited only one surviving reference to the date in Mayan glyphs, a stone tablet from the Tortuguero site in the Gulf coast state of Tabasco.

But the National Institute of Anthropology and History said in a statement that there is in fact another apparent reference to the date at the nearby Comalcalco ruin." Read More

The Comalcalco Ruin is also located in the Mexican State of Tabasco.

Mariachi Music has been recognized by UNESCO on the Intangible Heritage List!

UNESCO judges review lists of cultural foods, music, and practices each year. Those that are integral to festivities or events, and are unique to a specific culture over generations are recognized.

Mariachi Music has made the list as one part of Mexico's Intangible Cultural Heritage!

According to UNESCO:
"Mariachi is a traditional Mexican music and a fundamental element of Mexican culture. Traditional Mariachi groups, made up of two or more members, wear regional costumes adapted from the charro costume and interpret a broad repertoire of songs on stringed instruments...The lyrics of Mariachi songs portray love of the earth, hometown, native land, religion, nature, fellow countrywomen and the strength of the country. Learning by ear is the main means of transmission of traditional Mariachi, and the skill is usually passed down from fathers to sons and through performance at festive, religious and civil events. Mariachi music transmits values of respect for the natural heritage of the regions of Mexico and local history in the Spanish language and the different Indian languages of Western Mexico."

Here is the full UNESCO judges' review.

A great Mariachi YouTube Video:
