Today, I am having my laptop serviced through Dell's Next Business Day Warranty...for the
millionth time.

I am hard on electronics. Salt air is hard on electronics. So Me + Puerto Morelos is a fairly deadly combination.

Changes to TIP Car Importations

People ask me all of the time about importing foreign vehicles. When you bring a car from another country across the
Mexican border, it is issued a Temporary Import Permit (TIP).

Long story, short:

• You can only do it if you have a Tourist Visa or a Temporary Residency Visa. (Permanent Residents may not have foreign plated vehicles.)
• If you have a Tourist Permit and bring your vehicle across the border, your vehicle's TIP is only good for the length of time of that SAME tourist visa that you imported it with. So, if you leave Mexico without your vehicle, that vehicle is illegal.
• Each person is allowed 1 TIP. The vehicle's title must be in that person's name.
• If you have a Temporary Residency Visa, you must renew your TIP permit.
• Personal 2 Cents: TIPs are a huge pain. Don't do it unless you plan to cruise around Mexico for a short time and then return in your vehicle. If you live here, get a car here.

Time is Changing in Puerto Morelos and the Rest of Q. Roo

The idea of changing the timezone in Quintana Roo has been brewing awhile.

On December 4th, efforts finally resulted in the Congress approving placing the state of Quintana
Roo in the Eastern Time Zone, rather than the Central Time Zone.

The state will change to the Summertime Eastern Schedule (and, according to this article in The Playa Times, not participate in Daylight Savings Time) starting in April 2015.

In all, it shifts the clock to allow more daylight during the evening hours.

Puerto Morelos' National Park Shines as an Example to Save the Reef!

Did you know that the barrier reef, known as the Mesoamerican Reef, which is just offshore is part of the world's 2nd largest barrier reef? It is only smaller than Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Puerto Morelos' National Park was recently sited in the BBC article, "The Struggle to Save the Caribbean's Huge Barrier Reef", as an successful example of saving the reef life and improving its overall health.

Huffington Post recently described Puerto Morelos as the "poster child for a sleepy Mexican fishing village" in their article "Puerto Morelos: Cancun's Quiet Little Neighbor". (For those of you who are Puerto Morelos Old-Timers, can you believe Puerto Morelos is featured in the Huffington Post?)

Local news recently reported that the newly crowned Miss Puerto Morelos would be promoting Puerto Morelos as a destination for cultural events.

Local papers also reporting that the Cancun government is poised to give Puerto Morelos an infrastructure facelift. While the article is thin on details, I'd like to think that underground electricity is somewhere in the plan?? (...or maybe not.)

In other news: SUPER CHEDRAUI IS HAPPENING!

After years of vague rumors about a new supermarket opening in Puerto Morelos, we are happy to report that it's true! A new Super Chedraui store is well underway and is scheduled to open in November.  THIS NOVEMBER!

For those of you unfamiliar with the Chedraui brand -- their larger stores are somewhat similar to a Super Target, Kmart or Walmart, in that they have a full grocery store, bakery, butcher shop and pharmacy, as well as clothing, household goods, electronics, furniture, appliances, automotive items, etc. Smaller stores feature a full grocery store, and more limited selection of the other items.  This appears to be a Super Chedraui (according to the signage and size of the building) -- fingers crossed!

Here are some photos of the building under construction - it's located just north of the crucero and a little north of Semaforo Micheladas on the west side of the frontage road as you head into town from Cancun.  It's difficult to get a good photo of the entire building for two reasons:  (1)  it's HUGE and (2) security doesn't like you to pull into the parking lot and take photos (apparently...).  Did you notice I mentioned a parking lot?  There is parking and the lot looks quite large!  It's easy to enter off the frontage road, but difficult to tell if there is another entrance/exit.

This truck is roaming around town blasting a message seeking applicants for positions at the store!

It appears there may be other retail space available in the building -- we will update you when we learn what other stores or businesses are going in!  In the meantime, we are all dreaming about NOT driving to Cancun or Playa del Carmen for some of these items that just haven't been available locally.

The PoMo Cactus

The Bad News: Well, as some of you already know -- The beautiful cactus that bloomed in the moonlight was removed from the Town Square by the city citing safety concerns.

The Good News:  Lots of folks have complained and the cactus pieces are going to be replanted around town. So, more moon cactus to grow into old granddaddies like the one we've lost.

An Update from PoMo

Well, we are heading into the dog days of summer!! Personally, I am knee-deep in summer projects here at the office, which is the biggest reason my blogging has slowed. How are you all?

To bring you up to speed on the news:

Real Estate Sales: 

This has been Kim Tempel's first full high season in the sales agent seat. She's doing fantastic and getting a number of sales under her belt. Go Kim!

If you are considering selling your property, NOW is the time to begin the process for next year's high season! Oftentimes, we can help you make some off-season changes to help the property sell, make any updates to paperwork that are required, and have your property ready to roll for next high season.

2014 Real Estate Summit:

A couple of weeks ago, Kim and I attended the International Real Estate Summit that was held in Tulum.

During the Summit, we also obtained our federal certification in Real Estate Consultancy in Tourist Zones of Mexico from the Federal Secretary of Public Education (SEP) and Licensing Bureau (CONOCER). We are the first English-Speaking Realtors in Mexico to have this new certification!! Whoo Hoo!

We attended lots of great workshops, learned more about new markets, and made some great contacts with other realtors from the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Columbia, and Brazil!

Medical City Project:

I have been blogging occasionally about the Medical City Project that is slated for Puerto Morelos. At the Summit, I was able to meet with the project's coordinator. They have plans on paper, initial permits, and are gathering investors with the hopes of breaking ground in 2015. It's proposed location is on the west side of the highway, near the entrance to Petempich. It's a long term plan that includes retirement housing, numerous state-of-the-art hospitals (Oncology, Children's Hospital, Stem Cell Research, Orthopedics, and more...). What a great asset!

World Cup Soccer:

Puerto Morelos is a-buzz with Mexico battling it out in the World Cup Tournament. If you have never been in Mexico (or any other Latin or European Country) during the World Cup, it's a BIG STINKIN' DEAL. The entire country tunes into the game. Offices close, work stops, cantinas fill, and people crowd around TVs. Town fills with cheers simultaneously upon each score and groans (or worse) with each bad call. ;)
