Utilities Are Going Underground

Puerto Morelos Utilities are going underground!

The Municipality formally kicked off the project yesterday, February 21st. Measurements and preliminary steps are currently being taken.

Second step will be to channel and lay all of the cabling and utility wires. (FIBER OPTIC INTERNET IS COMING!!!!!) Step three will be to take down posts and make the underground connections.

Final phase is to repave and install new sidewalks.

Puerto Morelos Sports a New Logo!

The newly-formed municipality of Puerto Morelos is sporting a new logo.


Our leaning lighthouse is prominently displayed, along with a zapote tree, the tree that produces the sappy gum from which Puerto Morelos earned its spot on the map as an exporter of this raw material for chewing gum.

According to The Riviera Maya News, this logo was designed by David Espinosa Alvarez and was the winning entry from 32 submitted.

Welcoming New Sales Agent, Laura Zapata!

Hi there! We are THRILLED to welcome a new sales agent to our office, Laura Zapata!

While Laura is new to our office, she's by no means new to Real Estate in the Riviera Maya. I have had the pleasure of working alongside Laura for many years through our local AMPI chapter, where she served as President for a time. (For those of you unfamiliar, AMPI is the professional real estate organization in Mexico.)

As a matter of fact, she's not even a stranger to our office or clients, as she has filled in for me several times while I was away from the office on travel. Over the years, she has been one of my go-to people for real estate concerns, and I couldn't be more excited to have her selling in our office! She brings a wealth of experience, knowledge, and has the same value set as the rest of our team when it comes to our sales -- taking long view on our client relations, whereby clients return to us because we do our best to ensure that we provide the very best, knowledge-based service for their Mexico investments.

Fluent in English and Spanish, she'll be able to service our growing National Clientele. (Our office can transact in English, Spanish, Italian, and Portugese!)

Our sales team offers 35 years in Office Experience in selling in the Riviera Maya! I dare say that might be an unofficial high score!!

Enough about my excitement, let me share a bit about Laura before she made the leap into our office:

Laura Zapata fulfilled her dream of moving to Mexico 21 years ago. Growing up in Texas, she was always attracted to Mexico which was only a short drive away.  The music, the food, the language, all were things she desired to know more about.

Shortly after her settling into Playa del Carmen, she began selling real estate. She has sold property up and down the coast from the Riviera Maya to the Costa Maya and Bacalar.

Apart from the business of real estate, Laura has been active in the Mexican Association of Real Estate (AMPI) for many years serving in various positions locally. Her terms as President for the real estate board included the Riviera Maya board and the more recently formed Playa del Carmen board. Additionally, she served as Regional Coordinator and as an advisory board member at a national level for the real estate association.

Puerto Morelos Update

Hello Puerto Morelians!

We've been fairly quiet on the blog front this summer. Partly because things have been pretty tranquilo. Partly because there are Facebook Groups doing a great job of disseminating info faster than we can post about it!

All that being said, we are beginning to gear up for high season! (Can you believe it's around the corner again already??)

So, here's a quick rundown of things that are happening/have happened/or that might be of interest to you ----

Sargasso Seaweed: 

We seem to have been relieved of the mounds of Sargasso Seaweed that was floating onto all of the Caribbean Coastlines. According to this article, the Mexican Government has appointed 65 million pesos in beach clean up. Some of those funds are going to be used to purchase boats to assist. The article also concurs with the locals' observations, saying that the influx of seaweed has been reduced by 80%.

Puerto Morelos to be a new Municipality:

Puerto Morelos recently became its own municipality, meaning that we will no longer be a part of

Benito Juarez as before. This change will occur over the next several years as Puerto Morelos still lacks the staff/infrastructure to be completely on their own.

This change hasn't occurred without controversy. In a sly move, Puerto Morelos was granted their independence, but the state government also gerrymandered the new boundary lines of the municipality, omitting the Moon Palace and the "Golden Mile" of beach to its south. Clearly, this is a large loss of tax revenue to Puerto Morelos and no one (from Puerto, at least) is happy with the creative line drawing. A group called "Soy Latitud 21" (‪#‎soylatitud21‬) has formed to protest this move and have the original boundary of Latitude 21 be respected. If you wish to join in, you can sign their online petition.

Have you tried the 14-Course Meal at Le Chique? It just received kudos from CNN's Insider Guide to Cancun. Apparently the restaurant located in Azul Sensatori is excellent! If it tastes anything like the article's photo, I'm all in. 14 courses and seven wine parings! I haven't tried it, but it might be on my To-Do list very soon! If you try it, let us know how it goes!

Puerto Morelos' National Park Shines as an Example to Save the Reef!

Did you know that the barrier reef, known as the Mesoamerican Reef, which is just offshore is part of the world's 2nd largest barrier reef? It is only smaller than Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Puerto Morelos' National Park was recently sited in the BBC article, "The Struggle to Save the Caribbean's Huge Barrier Reef", as an successful example of saving the reef life and improving its overall health.
