Wondering about Real Estate in Mexico? FREE, Educational Workshops Begin December!

SPREAD THE NEWS!!
Our "Education About Real Estate in Mexico" Workshop Series is returning in December!

WHEN:  Every Tuesday Night @ 5 p.m. from December - April
WHERE:  Mayan Riviera Properties Office in the Puerto Morelos Town Square

Whether you are seriously considering buying/investing in Mexico or just curious to know more, our weekly workshop (hosted by Yours Truly) is a great, informal way to find out current, reliable information.

Come One, Come All!!  Each week I give a short presentation with the basics, adjust the conversation for the various interests in the group, then open the floor to answer any questions that attendees may have.  We have covered topics like buying real estate, buying businesses, owning real estate -- you name it.  It is attended by the casually interested, the curious, the serious, and those who have already made the leap and want to know more.  All in all, it is a great conversation and everyone leaves with a piece of info they may not have known before they attend.

Hope to see you at the first workshop, December 7th!

Town Activities! Halloween and More!

Some great events are coming soon!  Make room in your calendar!!

October 28th:  Trick or Treat and Costume Contest in the Town Square.  Apparently, because of Dia de los Muertos on November 2nd, schools are out for a long weekend.  So, town decided to have Trick or Treat on the 28th before everyone scattered for the holiday weekend.  A bit strange -- much like celebrating Christmas on the 22nd, but no matter -- it'll still be fun for the little ones.  However, I have the feeling that it'll be a double-dip opportunity (I would if I were a kid.) -- Expect trick-or-treaters on both the 28th and the 31st!

November 2nd:  Dia de Los Muertos!  If you haven't been to Xcaret for their Day of the Dead Festival (October 30 - November 2) --- GO!  It's excellent.  Live Theatre that goes into the night.  A totally different format than the standard Xcaret gig.  And lots of fun activities during the day for adults and kids alike!  Haven't seen any announcements, but the Puerto Morelos kids often set up altars in the Town Square -- so keep your eye out for those too!

November 21st:  Taste of Playa!  It's yummy.  It's affordable.  And it was a blast last year.  It's a great way to try out a bunch of Playa's best restaurants at once!

November 25th - 28th:  Playa del Carmen Jazz Festival!  IT'S FREE!  FREE!  FREE!  Big Crowds.  Top Notch Acts.  Fabulous Mamita's Beach.  Go!

Puerto Morelos Travel Log: The Sugartarian

So, I recently mentioned that The Sugartarian had visted Puerto Morelos and left us with Part 1 of her trip.  She has now posted Parts 1-3.  She had a great time, took super photos, and did some interesting things.

The Fabulous Puerto Morelos:  Part One
The Fabulous Puerto Morelos:  Part Two
The Fabulous Puerto Morelos:  Part Three

I think we have won over another Puerto Morelian!  I bet she'll be back ;)

Always great to see Puerto Morelos from another perspective!

Hurricane Paula Update

Looks like we have dodged the bullet!

We are still under hurricane warnings for another few hours, but it seems that Paula has crept along the coast but has kindly stayed out over water.  According to the NOOA 7 a.m. update above, we still have a 40 - 50% chance of receiving Tropical Storm Force Winds.

At the moment, you can see it raining sheets of rain out past the reef, but it's grey and drizzling here on shore.

Hurricane Paula Update

It's begun to rain in Puerto Morelos!

Schools for Cancun and Playa del Carmen have officially been cancelled for tomorrow.

The weather channel is saying that the eye is quite small.  So, hopefully, the eye and the winds will stay out at sea.

I plan to post updates...

You might want to consider a Dell Laptop, if you spend time in Mexico

Last week, my laptop bit the dust.  :(

For awhile, the girls at the office had made light of the fact that I clung to my dying dinosaur and kept propping it along -- even when its second battery wouldn't recharge and it was showing signs of age.  I blame my lack of enthusiasm on not wanting to learn a new operating system (Windows 7) and office suite (Office 2007), and the monumental task that faces you when with a new computer:  load and configure all of your programs, transfer files, customize your settings, etc.  Other friends blamed possible attachment issues.  ;)

With all that being said, it was 5 years old and its second motherboard reaped the wrath of humidity and salt air.  And, in its lifetime, it had 2 broken screens (I dropped it -- twice), a broken powercord, a new motherboard, new hard drive, and a new card reader.  [Have I mentioned that tropical life is tough on electronics?!?]  All of these were replaced, FREE of charge, next business day, at my office in Mexico -- through my Dell Warranty.

So, when it was time to replace my well-worn, well-loved dinosaur I happily purchased a new Dell.  If you spend time in Mexico, it might be something that you want to consider -- as the warranty they offer can't be beat.  Dell offers several levels of warranty, but to get accidental coverage AND international coverage, be sure to get the "creme de la creme" Premium Warranty.  Lesser policies don't have complete accidental coverage or international coverage -- leaving you having to wait until you are back to get your computer fixed. Also, from what I understand, it is only offered on Dell computers that are purchased directly from Dell - not through third party retailers.

It's not a cheap investment, but it isn't unreasonable either -- mine cost $450 USD for 4 years.  However, it EASILY covered the costs I would have incurred with all of the equipment I had replaced -- which, had I not have had the warranty, would have meant purchasing at least 2 new laptops.

I purchased my laptop on Dell.com in the USA.  Dell also sells laptops in Mexico, but I am not sure about the availability from Dell Mexico for English Operating Systems, English Keyboards, or Warranty Policies.

Good Bye, Laptop.  Good Bye, Windows XP.  Good Bye, Office 2003.  You will be missed...

Hurricane Paula is on Her Way

Hurricane Paula is expected to come close, or perhaps hit, the coast sometime tonight or tomorrow morning.  You can track updates on the National Hurricane Center Website.

While Paula is expected to be a Category 1, or perhaps a 2, it is always better to find yourself over-prepared and at risk of something anti-climatic, than finding yourself unprepared.

Make plans and prepare so that your household can be self sufficient, without electricity, for 3 days.  Consider your water and food supply, pet supplies, gasoline, gas for generator, gas for house, batteries for flashlights, etc.

Don't want to stick around the coast?  You can always head inland to Valladolid or Chichen Itza for some accommodations or a hurricane mini-vacation ;)
