Dragon Mart Update

Several articles published this week about the ongoing Dragon Mart Project.

The first article can be viewed here.  Mas o Menos Translation (the highlights are mine) of the article via Google Translate:

Now it will be until mid June 2013 when the opening of Dragon Mart to take place in Cancun. The initial projection announced in March 2011 was that in December 2012 the Asian market would open the world's largest in Cancun, but due to technical adjustments to the project construction has been postponed, he said.

Antonio Cervera Leon, president of the Association Owners and investors in the Riviera Maya (Apiqroo) and spokesman for the project in Quintana Roo. "The technical project is detailing and is in charge of Logistric, a company of Jalisco" he said. He also mentioned that the laying of the stone is seen between the months of May and June this year. In the absence of project definition, which has caused the concern of the footwear industry and federal authorities in Quintana Roo the Ministry of Economy (SE), which have been reported in previous publications Novedades de Quintana Roo of the Dragon Mart could be a threat to domestic industries by assuming the entry of more than two thousand five hundred Chinese enterprises, said: "There is a market such as Belize or Mexico City, the intention is to create a business center with exhibition, which mainly promote building materials. " However, the project developer said it is understandable concern that the project will also be a gateway to unfair trade practices and recognized that "everything must be set to the game, to avoid any future problem," ie, the technical project must be endorsed by not only federal and state. "That's why the project was delayed because they needed to review many technical problems, but will not come installed and manufacturing companies, which want to attract business tourism to close deals in the Dragon Mart and then the goods would go to the country end customer's home. "

On March 22, 2011 the State Government by Felix Gonzalez Canto said goodbye with the announcement of the construction of the Dragon Mart Cancunmesse made in this city. The project was promised as the largest exhibition center and sell products in China. It was established that the area would be located near the airport in Cancun with an investment of $ 150 million in the first stage. In addition, the same day Gonzalez Canto administration signed an agreement with the director of Dragon Mart, Hao Fang, to facilitate an exchange of incentive.

Among the latest developments, Cervera Leon mentioned the meeting in Mexico state government in turn with Chinese embassy officials to discuss the possibility of direct flights between China and Cancun, to help promote tourism between these regions.

Directors of Dragon Mart present the project to business in the month of May is expected to Dragon Mart managers make a formal presentation of the project to local entrepreneurs, detailing where the axes of the shopping complex which was announced from 2011, which will have a vision awareness of the benefits of this initiative that turns to diversify the state's economy, announced the president of the Caribbean Business Council (CCEC), Francisco Cordova Lira. Interviewed after chairing the monthly meeting of this group, which served as a framework to ratify holder of the board, said looking to get as much information on Dragon Mart to clear the doubts about the initiative that has generated some concern and speculation in some quarters. However, the bottom line is not biased and distorted information design on this initiative. Cordova Lira mentioned that it's finally have all the elements to define a common position on the Dragon Mart, without this meaning that there will be entrepreneurs that show position but obviously clarity is required, hence the month of May, executives will meet with members of ACCA to transparent information. also denied that one year of the project was announced, is staking more well said, trying to follow a procedure through which to achieve consensus with the Chinese government as not just a project in Mexico, "Mexico's participation is like China, we see great value, is working well, but seeing otherwise requires transparency in the project to all sectors. " He mentioned that the project managers detailing the axes of Dragon Mart, leaving aside the effect of biased information to get a clear picture of this trading platform that seeks to diversify the state's economy. In that regard, he mentioned that once completed this process in relation to the project settings is possible that in 2013 could materialize the Dragon Mart. "Hopefully everything goes well, there is a consensus with the Chinese government and the appropriate procedures for next year will be a reality."

  • This potential project doesn't come without major concerns from some major players.  Here is the latest article highlighting concerns from Mexico's Manufacturing Industry.
  • This article mentions that a Spring Festival 2013 is planned to be held in the facility.
  • This article mentions that China will have a 40% stake in the project, & Mexico and U.S. 30% each.

My take on the "Violence in Mexico" Topic

Well, I've finally decided to tackle the topic.  Generally I avoid it, for several reasons:

  1. I tend to believe that peoples' minds are stubbornly made up about the topic. So, me trying to persuade someone who fears being beheaded if they visit Puerto Morelos is probably futile.
  2. There are lots of groups who do a great job exposing the truth on the matter; albeit they are being drown out by media hysteria.
  3. I tend to get annoyed when asked, "Aren't you scared to live in Mexico?"  I know; I shouldn't.  But somewhere deep my gut does an eye-roll.  I am consciously trying to overcome this involuntary response and be an enthusiastic ambassador. [Thus, this post.]

Before I get too far into the topic, I think an aside is in order: This article relates to the real dangers that do exist in certain areas of Mexico due to the violent reactions of Mexico's drug cartels since the Federal Government has started to mix their Kool-Aid. This violence involves, in large part, members of the gangs, law enforcers, and reporters who are wrapped up in the mess. It has nothing to do with the occasional visitor who thinks that 'anything goes when I am in Mexico' and proceeds to inebriate themselves to the point of falling over their own balconies, etc. While those deaths are also unfortunate, I blame Darwin, not Mexico.

Martyrdom (Or, more appropriately, lack-thereof):
For those of you who don't follow this blog & may not know: I live in Puerto Morelos, Mexico full time with my husband and my two young children.  I am a mother, wife, and business owner -- but I AM NOT A MARTYR.  If I thought it was dangerous for our family, I'd leave.  My very existence (a very happy one, I might add), speaks to the fact that I truly don't feel the least bit endangered.

[Come to think of it, perhaps this is where the seed of annoyance come from. Perhaps I find the question irritating because if I believed it wasn't a good place to live, and I remain, what does that imply?]

Perspective:
In the U.S., I lived thirty minutes from Downtown Detroit. While I heart Detroit, each year it vies for the honored title of "Murder Capital" and usually ends up somewhere in the top 3. My intent isn't to disparage Detroit; it's to make a point: Detroit, like any other city, has its fantastic parts and its not-so-fantastic parts.

Smart Wise folks visit the fantastic parts and avoid the others.  Take Home Message = Do the same when you travel anywhere.

Geography:
Mexico, like its North American Counterparts, is a BIG country.  It has lots of space between places.

So, just like folks in Missouri don't sweat what's happening in not-so-fantastic parts of Detroit  Los Angelos New York Chicago, (Sorry, Chicago.) folks shouldn't sweat what's happening in the not-so-fantastic places in Mexico when they visit the Yucatan.

Here's a handy map that breaks down where you probably should and shouldn't be.  Be sure to mouse over the squares on the map for an explanation -- many warnings are limited to a particular portion or border area.

The U.S. Department of State has also updated its travel info for Mexico and provides its own map (which I found to not be as user-friendly as the one above).

If you haven't clicked the links to the maps, I'll save you the time.  The Yucatan Peninsula is green.  Green is good.  Green means it's safe for travel.

So, ultimately, how do I answer the question "Is Mexico Dangerous?"

My answer is, "Yes, in some places.  Just like certain areas of the U.S., Canada, and any other Country." Followed by, "When are you coming for a visit?"

Puerto Morelos Bike Path Fun Facts

I had the opportunity to meet the director of the Bike Path Project, Mr. Alejandro Avila Cetina, during the first meeting of CCC (Civic Communication Committee) this past Friday.

This newly-formed group (Thanks, Robin Brown!) of Puerto Morelians is a mixed bag of Mexicans and Expats that aim to research and educate everyone on local issues concerning development, our environment, and the community of Puerto Morelos.  I am looking forward to being a member of this group and will keep you all abreast of any findings/goings-on/news that we receive.

Here are some fun facts about the new bike path being installed:
  • The total length is 2.3 km long
  • It's actually an absorption field made of semi-permeable concrete.  So, it's designed to absorb water and shed it off of the path and the road and back into the mangrove.  It's pretty cool!  Check out the video below for a demo.
  • The electrical conduit that was laid underneath is to allow the hotels located to the south of town to directly connect to a power station in the Colonia, relieving the burden on the residential system.
  • It should be finished in about 1 week, but will need 27 days to cure properly.

Puebla, Mexico: A Work Trip That Wasn't Really Work

Josh (the husband) and I jetted off to Puebla, Mexico for the weekend.  His company is in the middle of constructing some Hacienda-Style Beach Condos and Villas.  They are going to be sold turn-key, so we are at the point of needing to order the furniture.

As you know, shopping in Cancun when you are looking for Mexican Style Furniture can be frustrating.  However, Puebla is a short flight away and will definitely not disappoint!

While we were there for 72 hours of shop-till-you-drop furniture extravaganza (while both of us had a terrible head cold), Puebla is an incredible city that is a World Heritage Site for its amazing historical architecture.  Many of the authentic, certified Talavera houses are located in Puebla, and you can go directly to see the artisans making their incredible pieces!
Even sickness can't keep us away
from our favorite Chocolate
Strawberries!

I could go on and on, but the moral of the story is that if you haven't gone -- then you're missing out.  Go!! Go!! Go!!

Josh and I hooked up with our old friend, Rene Nieto of Rene Nieto Antiques.  He's has amazing finds and if you are looking for furniture -- he's your guy!
