Puerto Morelos Bike Path Fun Facts

I had the opportunity to meet the director of the Bike Path Project, Mr. Alejandro Avila Cetina, during the first meeting of CCC (Civic Communication Committee) this past Friday.

This newly-formed group (Thanks, Robin Brown!) of Puerto Morelians is a mixed bag of Mexicans and Expats that aim to research and educate everyone on local issues concerning development, our environment, and the community of Puerto Morelos.  I am looking forward to being a member of this group and will keep you all abreast of any findings/goings-on/news that we receive.

Here are some fun facts about the new bike path being installed:
  • The total length is 2.3 km long
  • It's actually an absorption field made of semi-permeable concrete.  So, it's designed to absorb water and shed it off of the path and the road and back into the mangrove.  It's pretty cool!  Check out the video below for a demo.
  • The electrical conduit that was laid underneath is to allow the hotels located to the south of town to directly connect to a power station in the Colonia, relieving the burden on the residential system.
  • It should be finished in about 1 week, but will need 27 days to cure properly.
