Post Tropical Storm Rina Photos

Just went for a walk on the beach.

Didn't see any dead turtles or fish on the beach -- which is a normal, but depressing find.  The beach accesses are a little washed out.  There are a few lines down -- either from the storm or from boats being pulled out in pre-storm prep.  A few less palm fronds, a few less cocos.

But overall, no worse for wear!

The Beach Accesses have trails carved from the surge.

The "Piece of Paradise" made it through just fine

Can't say for certain whether this looked like this before... ;)

Keep an eye out.  There are low/downed phone lines around town.

Tropical Storm Rina

Tropical Storm Rina  8 a.m. Update

Well, Rina is behind us.  ...Sort of.

She's predicted to circle right back around and sock us with more of dismal weather for several more days.

Last night, we saw a good amount of rain, lightening, thunder, and a good bit of wind.  We lost power a few times, but nothing was out for too long.  My Cablemas internet is very slooowwww.  But, overall, I think we are no worse for wear.

The birds are chirping.  So, we are definitely in the clear.  ;)

This morning, things are still gray, but calm.

I am headed off to the beach to have a "Look-See".  Report back soon...

Rina: A Non-event?

The boys having fun in Rina rain.
It's raining.  It's raining a lot.  But it's just raining.

No real wind to speak of yet.  Although it is expected to pick up through the night and tomorrow afternoon.

While Rina will be over us through tonight and tomorrow, it is looking more and more like a non-event.

In the grand scheme -- that is GREAT news!

However......there was a lot of work that went to what ultimately might be a "non-event".

Makes me almost want to say that she could've stayed a Cat 1.  ;)

But not quite...

Hurricane Rina Update: 8 am CST

National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Rina, 8 am Update

Great News!!

Rina is a Category 1 and is expected to weaken as she gets to land.  Looks like we are likely to get Tropical Storm Force winds (approx. 75 miles/hour), a storm surge of 2-4 feet.

That is completely do-able!  Yay!  Much better than the Category 3 they were predicting Tuesday!

Keep in mind that weaker storms oftentimes result in more personal injuries than larger storms.  In big storms, the wind is too strong to go outside.  In weaker storms, people may be tempted to go outside, check out the waves, etc.  This is how people get hurt or killed.  Stay inside away from flying coconuts and rogue waves.  Stay Safe Everyone!!

Rina Update: 5 p.m. CST

WooHoo!  We are finished prepping properties!!  We wrapped up about 1 p.m. today!

...And not a moment too soon.  It has started to pour rain here in Puerto Morelos!

I want to thank all of our Mayan Riviera Properties staff who did such a great job working together to get everything done in time!!

With the great news of the storm weakening, it's time to sit back, listen to the rain, and start cutting limes.  I have several cold Dos XX calling my name.

Stay safe everyone!  Ciao for now!

I'll keep providing updates as long as I keep my internet signal :)

Letter to Mayan Riviera Properties´ Homeowners

Letter to Mayan Riviera Properties´ Homeowners:

Hurricane Rina is on her way.  We are busy following our Hurricane Protocol for the properties.

For any updates, please check our blog: www.PuertoMorelosBlog.com.  We will be sharing any important updates prior to, during (if possible), and after through the blog.

Also, you can track the storm through the National Hurricane Center website.

We will be turning off Gas and Electricity in all properties.  These services will be reconnected when it is safe to do so.  (If you have food in your refrigerator, we will throw out its contents afterward during clean-up.)

If you are here --- and since you won´t have any gas or power --- consider going inland.  Mayaland Hotel in Chichen Itza is a good option.

Our office will close at 11 a.m. tomorrow and all employees will be to attending to their own homes and families.  We will remain closed until after the storm.  We will update you via the blog when we have re-opened.

If we retain cell service, we will all have our cell phones on.  Please contact us only in emergency.  Otherwise, please stay tuned to the blog for updates.

Laura: 011 521 998 109 9930 (as dialed from the U.S./Canada)
Amber:  011 521 998 109 9939 (as dialed from the U.S./Canada)

Our general email address: Info@MayanRivieraProperties.com will be attended to through 11 a.m. tomorrow.  Other email addresses may not be checked until post storm.  It is all-hands-on-deck here, so we are not able to check our email accounts as we normally would.

Best from all of us,

Preparing for a Hurricane

PREPARING FOR A HURRICANE:

Pre-Storm Preparation:
  1. Secure Your Outside Area:  Take a look around your house/area and look for things that can be secured so that they won't go flying.  Cut down weakened tree limbs; Secure Tinacos -- fill them with water & store the lid inside; Tie Gates Closed; Remove Sconces; Store Flower Pots; etc.
  2. Your Pool:  For smaller storms, you can drop the level of your pool.  For big storms, it won't matter -- They are going to overflow.  If you are on the ocean, use caution in lowering your pool by more than several feet.
  3. Your Windows:  We have mentioned before that plywood is not ideal, but if that is what you have -- you will want to cover your windows with it.  Close Hurricane Shutters if you have them.
  4. Your Generator:  Be sure that you have a sufficient gas supply and that your generator is in good working condition.  Remember to check the battery!
  5. In Your Home:  Pick up all rugs and delicate items that are in the floor.  Lift all curtains well above floor level.  Remove or tuck in bedding so that it is not near the floor level.  It will get wet and draw the water up into your mattress.  Assume your windows will leak -- They all do.
  6. Your Electricity:  In stronger storms, the city will turn off the power or it goes out on its own. If you lose power, turn off your electrical main and leave it off until after the city power supply has been restored.  You don't want the surge coming into your lines when they turn the grid on again.
  7. Your Gas Line:  As a precaution, we turn off the gas supply at the tank.  If gas lines were to break, it would prevent a gas leak.  The gas leak would be costly at the least and dangerous at the worst.
  8. Your Food/Water/Medications/Pet Food Supply:  Have on hand sufficent water supply, non-perishable foods, medications, and pet food for the storm's expected duration + 3-5 extra days.
  9. Get Rainy Day Items to Keep You Occupied:  Gather decks of playing cards, books, etc. to while away your time inside.
  10. The Proteccion Civil in Cancun has a Facebook page.  They have been good about sending updates.  Use Google Translate to help out your Spanish.  ;)
During the Storm:
  1. DON'T GO OUTSIDE!!  A famous comedian once said, "It's not THAT the wind is  blowing.  It's WHAT the wind is blowing!"  ...And he's right!  Please don't win the Darwin Award by being swept away by a rouge wave or a flying coconut to be a amateur journalist!!
  2. If you are ordered to evacuate, then do it!  Let's face it, if you are there during a severe storm -- You aren't able to hold the house up if something does happen (See #1).  So leave!  You can go inland, you can go south -- your evacuation location will depend on the track of the particular storm.
After the Storm:
  1. Be Extra Careful:  Wires may be down and power can travel in the puddles!!  Be aware of things precariously hanging from rooftops, trees, etc.
  2. Be a Good Neighbor:  This is what Mexico does best!  Check on your neighbors to be sure everyone is getting along OK.
OVERALL, USE COMMON SENSE AND STAY CALM!

If you are a Mayan Riviera Properties client, we have a protocol in place for Hurricane Prep.  Please see our website for details.

SUERTE!!

Hurricane Rina develops into Category 2 Hurricane overnight

Hurricane Rina, National Hurricane Center, 8 a.m. EST Update

Still keeping our eye on Hurricane Rina.  She developed in to a Category 2 hurricane overnight.

Lots of rain and winds!

We've had some cold north winds, which locals say is going to help slow her down when she reaches shore.

But experts at Weather Underground and the National Hurricane Center are more convinced that she is going to keep her strength.  I choose to air on the side of caution and am going with the experts.  ;)

Travelog: CancunCanuck Visits Mexico City

As most of you know, there is little that I enjoy more than traveling in Mexico.  Living so close to the Cancun airport, makes Puerto Morelos a great hub to venture out for quick trips to see other parts of this amazing country!

Seasoned Puerto Morelians:  If you haven't yet used Puerto Morelos as a travel hub -- I couldn't recommend it more!!

My fellow-blogging-friend Kelly, the CancunCanuck, recently made a weekend trip to Mexico City.  Her travelog is fabulous and certainly makes me want to pack my bags!  I have yet to spend time in Mexico City for anything more than an airport layover ---- but it is definitely on "The List"!

Hot Peppers! A funny story...

Puerto Morelian, Jim Kaszynski
Puerto Morelian, Jim Kaszynski, recently posted a great story about nearly dying from a hot pepper here in Puerto Morelos.

The Yucatan is home to some pretty spicy peppers, including the king-daddy-of-them-all --- the Habanero.

After being here any length of time, we all have a similar story to tell of unknowingly biting into what seems like a fiery death.

How 'bout you?  What's your "hot pepper story"?

Humanimals Show tentatively rescheduled for Tonight at 8pm

Well for those of you that aren't here -- It has been raining CATS & DOGS since Friday.

Fortunately, our mangrove is taking a long drink of water.  This time of year is the height of our rainy season.  Normally, we get quick burst of showers and then beautiful sun in-between.  But, when a tropical depression sits over us, as one does now, we are in for a pretty damp future.

We have nestled in for the weekend -- carving pumpkins, decorating for Day of the Dead, and generally preventing stir-craziness.

Our Pumpkins

Unfortunately -- What looks to be an incredible Humanimals Show in the Town Square was washed out last night.  They have tentatively rescheduled the show for tonight, Sunday, October 16 at 8 pm.  Maybe the rains will let up enough for them to perform.  If not, I'll keep you posted if there is any chance for them to reschedule.

Well, in this morning's I was reading through the "Riviera Maya Report" by Michelle Kinnon -- a fantastic source of local info and ongoings, gathered from various local sources.  The Report is sharing a post discovered by LocoGringo: The Maya 2012 guide is being offered for FREE through the month of October!!

Huicol Volkswagen Art!

So, I recently posted info about driving your car into Mexico.  However, if you are going to look for a car here, perhaps you can snag this SWEET Volkswagen!

I originally saw this car through a post on The Truth About Mexico.  They had linked to the original article posted on Core77 which describes how the famous Huichol Indigenous Artists covered this classic in their incredible bead work.  The article is definitely worth a read!

Photo Taken By Adrienne Bard -- Seen on Core77

After all, what says "MEXICO" more than a Volkswagen Beetle?  And this particular one has "PUERTO MORELOS" written all over it!

Thinking of Bringing a Car to Mexico?

[NOTE: I have updated and this article here. Please refer to this new article for your information.]

I have been asked about bringing a car to Mexico several times in the past month.  So, I thought I would explain the procedure for any that are curious.  Please note that this applies to cars being driven into Mexico with foreign (Canada, USA) license plates.

A)  You are allowed a total of one imported vehicle per person.  That vehicle's title must be in the name of the person importing it.

B)  You are allowed to bring a foreign plated vehicle into the country if:
  • You have a "non-immigrant" status on your travel visa.  This means that your FMM is for "tourist" or FM3.  If you have an FM2, you have "immigrant" status and are not allowed.

C)  The questions that I have received have been about the length of time that your importation permit is valid.
  •  If you have an FM3:  Your permit will be valid as long as your FM3 is valid.  We have had our car here for several years and the permit has remained valid because we continually renew my husband's FM3.
  • If you have a tourist visa:  According to the lovely customs lady I spoke with to confirm this point over the phone -----  Your permit will be only valid for the length of time that your original tourist visa is valid.

In other words:  If you bring a car into Mexico with a tourist visa, your visa can be authorized for a maximum of 180 days.  As long as THAT PARTICULAR visa is valid, the vehicle import permit is valid.  If you leave the vehicle behind and re-enter at a later date, the vehicle permit is no longer valid because your original tourist visa has expired.

D)  When you leave Mexico with your vehicle, be sure to stop at the aduana offices to cancel your permit.  This way, when you desire to re-enter at a later date, you will be free to do so.

For more info (in English) and a toll-free number that you can call with any questions, check out this website.
