Day of the Dead and Halloween in Puerto Morelos 2011

Halloween 2011 in Puerto Morelos was pretty much a washout thanks to the remnants of Tropical Storm Rina.  But, nonetheless, the kids had a great time.

We bought and carved pumpkins. (Twice actually.  Our first ones rotted before they made it to Halloween.)

We celebrated Caden's Birthday at Peter Piper Pizza with a Halloween-themed costume party.

Our office had a Pumpkin Decorating Contest for our staff.  Everyone put on their "creative hats" and came up with some great pumpkins!!  Tanis, Ron Martin, and Linda Austin were kind enough to judge entries!

On the 31st, the torrential rains began just in time for trick-or-treating and the Puerto Morelos Costume Contest.  Some brave souls participated with umbrellas.  We opted for drier improvisation -- We scurried into the car and took a couple of bummed-out kiddos to OXXO for some candy to make up for their unexpected losses.

Then the skies cleared (almost, to an intermittent sprinkle) and we were able to make enjoy a few hours at the annual Halloween Party at Cantina Habanero.  As usual, a good time was had by all.

I'm a Zombie.  Josh, well, you can't take him anywhere really.
Scary Ms. Cettina.  She made her spooky skin!  How cool is that??

Today, November 2nd, wraps up two days of Dead of the Dead celebrations in Mexico.  The Day of the Dead is one of my favorite Mexican traditions and one that we have adopted wholeheartedly.

Last weekend, we made a trek into Cancun's Market 23 for Day of the Dead goodies to make our altar.  The market fills with sugar skulls, skeletons, mums, and candles.  It is one of my favorite times to visit!

I thought I would share with you a few photos from our family's altar.  We find it's an excellent opportunity to reflect on family; those family/friends/beloved pets lost, and those whom we still cherish our time with.  The kids really enjoy creating the altar, and it always prompts the best questions and conversation.

WE HAVE A PHOTO CALL ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE!!  PLEASE POST ANY PHOTOS THAT YOU MAY HAVE OF HALLOWEEN AND DAY OF THE DEAD TO OUR WALL!!
