Recent Homeowner's Workshop: U.S. Tax Obligations for Citizens who own, bank, and work in Mexico

On April 24th, we hosted a special edition of our weekly workshop with guest speaker Stuart Jackson, CPA.

I learned a lot from the workshop.  Namely, that the U.S. tax code is extremely complicated and that you need to seek the advice of a tax professional to be sure that you are filing your taxes correctly, along with the various disclosure forms that are now required.  (Tax reform, anyone??)

Mr. Jackson was kind enough to create a handout that served as the outline for his talk.  The handout lists the various forms that may or may not apply to you, depending on your situation. But, it serves as a great starting point to discuss each with your tax professional.

The handout is available for download here.

Are you looking for an accountant? If so, Mr. Jackson is a CPA and is extremely knowledgeable in tax matters as they relate to foreign bank accounts, trusts, properties, assets, and transactions. He is a partner in The Jackson Group, P.C. in Georgia.

I'd like to give my special thanks to several people who graciously helped with the workshop:

  • Stuart Jackson for giving of his time to help inform us.
  • Emilio Muñoz, Jr. for allowing us to use the local hotel Hacienda Morelos' Restaurant as the location for our workshop.
  • Photographer Micheal Maurus for allowing me to use his tripod for filming.
  • Mr. & Mrs. Dengel for introducing Mr. Jackson and I, helping us get this event off of the ground.
Much Appreciated!!

Since I had a large response from those who were interested but not able to be present in person, we recorded the lecture and have posted it to YouTube. (See below.)

As Mr. Jackson mentions in the beginning of his lecture. This information is intended for educational purposes only. You should seek the advice of a tax professional when making decisions regarding your specific circumstances.

[In other words: Please don't ask me questions regarding your taxes, as I surely don't know the answer. Ask your accountant.  If you don't have an accountant, contact Mr. Jackson. ;)  ]
