This weekend in PoMo

Head's up on happenings in PoMo this weekend. (If you have an event going on, feel free to leave a comment in order to promote it!)

La Sirena Restaurant is opening it's bar!

Beginning Friday (today) afternoon, La Sirena will be opening its bar. I understand that a full menu will be coming up shortly. They have been working hard on their location over Casa Martin Grocery Store. It's always been one of the best spots in PoMo, and I have good word that it will have yummy food to back up its excellent location.

Swimming Marathon

The big Aguas Abiertas Swim Meet is Saturday. Starts early at 7 and 8 am.

Recycle Day!

Saturday, February 22nd the recycling truck will be in the town Square from 9am-1pm.

Acrobatic Circus Show!

Saturday, Feb 22nd @ 6:30pm in the Town Square. Another great event brought to PoMo by our Casa de la Cultura!

PoMo Artwalk is taking flight!

The PoMo Artwalk is a new project that is just getting off of the ground. I couldn't be happier that the art scene in Puerto Morelos is getting its wings! Stay tuned for upcoming events!

Are you prepared? Estate Planning in Mexico

A recent and thoughtful article article regarding something we don't like to think about: Estate Planning.

If you own your property in a fideicomiso, that portion your estate planning has been done for you. In your fideicomiso, you have appointed secondary beneficiaries. So, you are set regarding what is probably your largest asset in Mexico.

However, do you have everything in place if something should happen to you while you are here? What about your car, bank accounts, and other assets?

This article is worth a read. http://writingfrommerida.com/2013/12/13/illness-or-death-in-mexico/

As a note: Any legal documents that you have from your home country, like your Birth Certificate or Marriage License must receive an apostille. If your country doesn't have an apostille -- Canadians, I am talking to you --  then you have to get your domestic documents verified through your Mexican Consulate.
After your documents have received an apostille (or are verified through the Mexican Consulate), you can bring down the documents and them translated by a certified translator here in Mexico. There are several of them in Cancun. Claveria & Asc is a company that we have used in the past and have been happy with.

Another consideration, which this article doesn't mention, but I think is worth doing since we are on the topic of being prepared --- Do you have emergency medical coverage in Mexico? Do you have coverage to would pay to have you medically evacuated to your home country in an emergency? It's important to realize that some private and many government insurances don't cover medical claims in foreign countries or medical evacuations. If you are on a short term stay abroad, then trip insurance can cover you. If it is a long term situation, look for optional riders to your primary coverage to be certain you are covered when you leave your home country's borders.

Update from PoMo

A little bit of this and a little bit of that...

Road Update:

The Puerto Morelos Croc
For those of you not in PoMo (If you aren't, why not?!?), the roads in PM are getting progressively better. At least, the rains have stopped and they are drier, if nothing else. They have re-grated the road behind the church, as well as the road into town from Crococun. The stretch of road between town and Desire Hotel remains terrible, but they have put some material there to help fill in the parts of the road that have washed away. Lots of work remains, but at least the water isn't covering the roadways anymore so that you can see where you are swerving...

New Alcalde's Facebook Page:

Want to keep up with what the city has to say? The new Alcalde has created a facebook page for announcements.

Wednesday Workshops:

Our Wednesday night workshops are going well! If you haven't heard about them yet, we offer a free workshop where you can learn about living, retiring, working, and buying in Mexico. We have them every week from December through April. If you are interested, you are welcome to attend. If you have friends down to visit and you are tired of giving them the shmeel of how it all works - send them to us!

Puerto Morelos Croc:

I happened to be driving by the Jardin de los Tejones, next to the Casa de la Cultura, on Ninos Heroes and snapped this photo of the Puerto Morelos Croc. He is a frequent visitor. He's also large and apparently living quite well on his diet of what I can assume is Tejones. Just remember, he is wild. His teeth are big. Act accordingly. AND PLEASE DON'T FEED HIM! Crocs that become habituated to being fed by humans become problem crocs and then dead crocs!!

Cirque du Soliel is COMING!!!

Big News!!

Back in September, they announced that Cirque du Soleil was coming to the Riviera Maya, but over the weekend they announced that a permanent theater (The first for Cirque outside of Orlando or Las Vegas) would be constructed by the hotel group that owns Mayan Palace and the Grand Mayan. An intimate 600-seat theater, reportedly set over a giant cenote is scheduled for a grand opening in November. The show, paired with a gourmet dinner and champagne, are "designed to deliver a level of intimacy between audience and performance never before seen in a Cirque du Soleil show".

Some reports say that it will be built at the Grand Mayan, others don't specify -- but either way this impressive show will be within 15 minutes of Puerto Morelos!!!

Foreign Buyers to stick with Fideicomisos

Click to Read the Full Ruling
There was a proposal in 2013 which would abolish the necessity of a fideicomiso for buyers wishing to own property in Mexico's Restricted Zones. This proposal was passed by the lower house of the Federal Congress. The upper house has voted against this proposal, essentially killing the prospects of its adoption.

The proposed change was seen as a way to further encourage foreign investment by eliminating the costs associated with a fideicomiso. However, those of you who have taken our weekly workshops know that a trust is a great way to own foreign property in any country, as it eliminates any probate issues for heirs to your property in the event of the property owner´s death. (If you didn't know that from our workshops, then come by! We have one each and every Wednesday from December - April!)
