Have you visited Chichen Itza?  We love going!  And it's in the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula!  The trip between Puerto Morelos and Chichen Itza is filled with great towns, villages, and cenotes that make the trip all the better!  It can be a day trip or a nice overnighter, depending on what you want to squeeze in.

Your timing of seeing the ruins during the storied year of 2012 couldn't be more perfectly timed -- particularly if you consider that it is the end of the era in the Mayan Calendar!

If you are thinking about a day trip, then you definitely want to go on the Chichen Itza/Maya Tour!  The tour is ran by a local Puerto Morelos tour guide company that specializes in boutique tours of the area.  The group sizes are limited to a max of 12, your stops are off-the-traditional-beaten-path, and will give you the true flavor of the region!  They are actually tours that will satisfy even the most "non-tour-going folk".  They are truly a MUST-DO!

Flea Market Event at Cancunmesse December 2-4th

The Cancunmesse Center is having an event called "NoviSaldos" from December 2-4, 2011.  Various sellers will be hocking used items, in good condition.

Ever in search of folkart, the event has peaked my interest.  I'm thinking it might be worth a "look-see".

Improvements Slated for Puerto Morelos' Beach Access!

Is this a moment of "ask and ye shall receive"?

Yesterday, I made the suggestion that some of the money announced through another program be used to build public bathrooms.

While I am certain I had nothing to do with it, I am super happy to see this article!  It mentions that 3 beach access in Puerto Morelos (and 2 in Cancun) are going to be receiving upgrades -- including parking and...wait for it...PUBLIC BATHROOMS!!!

Puerto Morelos Mini-Makeover in the Works

According to this SIPSE news article, Puerto Morelos is slated for a mini-makeover.  The government has apportioned 15 million pesos for a Improve the Urban and Touristic Image of Puerto Morelos Program.

New signage, lighting, etc. could be included.

It will be interested to see what improvements they make.

Long-time Puerto Morelian Marco Riha is Austrian, a fantastic guide, and owner of KOOL TOURS.  He is the Art Director of the calendar project and was also extremely helpful on the shoot.

They have combined their creative talents, humor, and sense of community to pull this outstanding community project together!

A portion of the proceeds from each calendar sale will support 3 great, local, Puerto Morelos Community Assets: Casa de la Cultura Community Center, El Mundo Para Puerto Morelos Charity, and the Waldorf Kindergarten on Calle 8.!!!

National Holiday: Day of the Revolution

November 20th,  is Dia de la Revolucion (Day of the Revolution).  

This holiday celebrates the beginning of the 1910 Revolution in Mexico which resulted in the overthrow of Dictator Porfirio Diaz.  After the overthrow, a new constitution was formed in 1917 and Mexico freely elected a President Alvaro Obregon in 1920.

There will be a parade starting in the Puerto Morelos Town Square at 7 a.m.

In observance of this national holiday, Mayan Riviera Properties will be closed Monday, November 21, 2011.

Buen Fin: Sales & Cenotes!

This weekend (Saturday - Monday) is "Buen Fin".  Many national stores - including Home Depot, Liverpool, Telebodega, & Sears - as well as local retailers are going to be holding giant sales.  Most are billing their sales as the largest discounts of the year.  If you are thinking of buying, this weekend may be a good time to shop!

If you aren't into shopping, I just saw on Twitter that all of the Cenotes in Puerto Morelos' Ruta de Los Cenotes are discounting their entry fee to $50 pesos per person!!!

Bajo Luz - A Contemporary Dance Group Performs for Puerto Morelos

Last Saturday, Puerto Morelians were in for a fantastic treat!  Bajo Luz is a local contemporary dance group that combines dance with acrobatics.

The weather finally cooperated (they have been trying to have the show since mid-October) on last Saturday night, and we all settled in to see them.

They have started a weekly event, Art-In-The-Park, each Saturday evening in the Puerto Morelos Town Square to display the talents of local artists.  Their latest works are displayed  in the Malecon, in front of the Town Square from 6-9 pm.

 Do you know local artists?  Invite them to join!

The kids and I went down the the park last Saturday for a stroll and to check out Art-In-The-Park. My oldest son, Caden (budding photographer), snapped these great pics!  If there was ever a way to enjoy art, strolling through the Malecon in front of the warm ocean breezes on a beautiful Puerto Morelos evening is definitely it!!

There is a new restaurant, Rustika, in Puerto Morelos.  Have you tried it yet?

They are just opening and planning to have live music on the weekends.

PGA Maykoba Golf Classic -- February 22-26, 2012

The Puerto Morelos Event Calendar is starting to fill with activities for the coming high season!  Add this one to your must-do list if you are a golf fan!

The annual PGA Mayakoba Golf Classic, held just 15 minutes south of Puerto Morelos, has been scheduled for February 22-26, 2012. 

The tournament tour stop started in 2006 and was the first international stop on the PGA tour.  It looks like the tournament has been a success for the PGA, as they have just renewed the contract with the Mayakoba's El Camaleon Golf Course for another 6 years -- ensuring the tournament will stay at Mayakoba for another 6 years through 2018.

Many Puerto Morelians volunteer for the tournament and gain free entry for the event.  If you are interested in volunteering, contact them at this link.

Mexico makes steps toward going green!

Several recent news articles have highlighted Mexico's recent efforts at going green.

Mexico’s President Felipe Calderón has announced a Sustainable Light Program.  Mexico is focused on reducing the country's overall energy consumption.  To this end, and as a part of the program, Mexico will begin to phase out higher energy light bulbs (incandescent and halogen).  Right now, it is offering a light bulb exchange program through the electric company CFE.  With your ID and most recent paid light bill, they will exchange -- without cost -- 4 incandescent bulbs with 4 compact fluorescent bulbs.  They project to replace over 23 million bulbs by the end of 2011.

The program not only helps its citizens reduce their energy bills, and the environment, it will also save the Mexican Government in the amount that they subsidize non-DAC electricity bills.

In other green news this week is the announcement that Mexico is #2, behind only Brazil, in the number of projects in Latin America funded through Carbon Credits via the Kyoto Treaty.

Wrapping up "green news":  Mexico has also announced a $500 million dollar investment by Baja Sun Energy SRL to produce solar energy.  This is Mexico's FIRST Solar Energy Company!

Way to Go Mexico!  Small Steps.  A Long Way to Go (**Ahem...Curbside Recycling**).  But Poco a Poco!!

Yucatan State Fair begins November 11th

It's time for the Yucatan State Fair!!  It begins on November 11th and runs through December 4th.

There will be a full program of events available for download on Friday (or so they tell me) at this link.

Fairs are full of great food, arts, and vendors.  It's a great way to taste, see, and smell real Mexico!

Lionfish: From Pest to Plate! Includes Video Footage from Puerto Morelos!

The lionfish is a non-native, invasive, and venomous species that is invading our waters.  There are numerous efforts to get their numbers controlled.  The best option is to give them a good market value!  And guess what??  They just happen to be super tasty!!

Please support our reef by requesting lionfish at your favorite Puerto Morelos fish joint.  Hopefully, if it becomes a popular restaurant fare, it will help to reduce their numbers!!

Recently, the efforts of one researcher to improve fishing techniques with local Puerto Morelos fisherman was highlighted in this video and article by Channel 5 News of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Tomorrow!! Golf FORE Everyone! FREE Golf Event at Fairmont's PGA El Camaleon Golf Course!

The El Camaleon Golf course is home to the PGA Mayakoba Classic Golf Tournament, and they are hosting a "Golf FORE Everyone"  event tomorrow!

Golf FORE Everyone aims to create a fun-filled, diverse and educational program that teaches about the game of golf and its ideals. The program encourages active participation in the game as a participant and as a fan, and facilitates the integration of golf into the lives of all those within the community. Golf PARa Todos is a community program presented by the Mayakoba Golf Classic.

The inaugural installment of Golf FORE Everyone was held in October 2007 at El Camaleón Golf Club in Playa del Carmen. Golf PARa Todos is open to people of all ages, backgrounds and levels of golf skill or knowledge.
