A Visit to Lake Bacalar

Fishing at Sunrise.

It has been a long time since I have been to Lake Bacalar.  A LONG time.  The last time I was there, there was only one small restaurant that served everything with hot dogs on it.  We always stayed at Rancho Encantado, which is still there.

This time, we did something different.  It was fabulous.  And it will NOT be such a long wait to return again!

Lake Bacalar at Sunrise
We happened to find, via the world wide web, a hidden paradise called Bacalar Lagoon Resort.  The resort is located on the far side of the lake, nestled into the jungle surroundings.  It was one of just a few places that were grandfathered into the section of the lake that has been turned into a nature preserve.  So, you are completely surrounded by nothing and everything at the same time.

Our Cabaña
The resort has lovely cabañas.  Ours was a two bedroom with a queen in one bedroom and a bunk bed with trundle in the other.  Each room has lots of windows for cross breeze and a ceiling fan.  Onsite is a lovely restaurant that serves breakfast and dinner.  We brought along a cooler of goodies and had picnic lunches onsite.

The rooms were impeccably clean and quite comfortable.  The restaurant had great food and a ping pong table which saw several Schulz Family Tournaments over the weekend.  They have lots of kayaks - singles and doubles.  There is also a lovely beach area, which Easton's sand shovels used to their full potential.

We swam, napped, kayaked, bird watched, napped, fished, ready books, went to bed early, and napped some more.  Get the picture??

For anyone who hasn't seen Lake Bacalar, I won't attempt to describe its brilliant blue color.  Nothing I can say really does it justice.  It's truly something you have to see to believe.
